An Old Iranian Execution: Do Karaji

Writer: Oral ToğaOral Toğa

Execution is a method of punishment that has been applied to people for various reasons over the centuries. This went on for several generations, from the most severe crimes to the most arbitrary decisions. In this article, I would like to briefly talk about the method of execution that appeared in Iran, which was used during the Achaemenid period: “دو کرجی (do kereci)” or “Skafism” (Gr. Σκάφη), as in Western languages. He mentions that the Persians, especially the Greek rebels, used this painful execution method on several occasions. The Greek historian Mestrius Plutarchus and the 12th century Byzantine chronicler Zonaras are among those who wrote this method of execution in detail. Let’s take a look at the execution method. First, the Shah’s people tie punished people to the boa because they made the Shah very angry. Then they will put a second boat on them. But their face, legs, and arms remain outside, and their body is between the two ships. The people of the enraged Sshah prepare a mixture of milk and honey and offer it to punished people. They order to mix this mixture and pour it into the accused man’s mouth. If he refuses to eat, they threaten to drive nails into his eyes. Then, with great care, the soldiers of the Shah pour this mixture into the accused man’s face, arms, and legs. They hold his head and turn his face and head towards the sun. This way, they dry the mixture so that the insects appear later. Then they send him to the swamp with the boat to which a man is tied. Naturally, all insects dry on this mixture of honey and sugar. Over time, worms begin to appear, and in about two weeks punished one will be eaten by worms and die. For example, the sources say that in one of the executions, a person died in such execution in 17 days. In other words, he waited for the hungry insects to gnaw at him and finally eat him. And after 17 days, he dies in torment.
